Wow, some of those movies I’ve never even heard of, like Automata, The Congress, and The Signal. I still want to see Big Hero 6, Robocop, and Hobbit 3, maybe Birdman too, but I don’t expect any of those to be bad.

Either through good luck or good planning, I haven’t seen a complete dud of a movie all year. The older I get, the more I try to avoid bad movies. Even the worst movies I saw I still gave a respectable C+ to, and there were four of those: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (after bumping it down from B+, the more I thought about it), The Lego Movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Noah.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had good drama and excellent character interaction between Peter and Gwen, May, and Harry. But, the main villain was so campy it was like he came from a Joel Schumacher-directed Batman movie, the development of the secondary villain was rushed, and the unneeded tertiary villain was obnoxious and tacked on. Everything about Peter’s personal life was written & performed very well, but horrible villains detracted from the Spider-Man portions of the movie. I also wonder if I could ever re-watch this movie again. Maybe I can if I multi-task during the villain scenes or fast forward to just the character drama and pretend it’s a movie on Lifetime or The Hallmark Channel. ;)

The Lego Movie was cool in some ways but also disappointing. It was too frenetic, had a weird ending, might have been better with someone other than Will Ferrell, and made a better Batman movie than it did a Lego movie. Still, it was a movie all about Lego and had some good pop culture references.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was surprisingly decent, but I had super low expectations.

The Noah movie took a ton of artistic license with the Bible. In some ways that was necessary, because when I re-read those verses, there really aren’t a lot of details there. So, it was neat to see some of the interesting interpretations taken in the movie and having the story brought to life in an intriguing and mostly respectful way. Some of the drama & action were good as a result. But, there were also parts of the movie that were boring, just plain bizarre, or blatant contradictions to details that were in the Bible. So, like Amazing Spider-Man 2, it was an insanely mixed bag of good and bad.

With only 1 out of 4 of my C+ movies in the list, I’ll have to be mean and vote for just TMNT even though it really wasn’t that bad. I admit I’m tempted to vote for Transformers 4: Age of Extinction just because I’m 99.99% certain that movie was wretched. But, since I didn’t actually see it, I’ll be fair and refrain. ;)

Here’s how I would rank all the 2014 movies I’ve seen so far:
    01. Captain America: The Winter Solder (A-)
    02. X-Men: Days of Future Past (A-)
    03. Muppets Most Wanted (A-)
    04. Guardians of the Galaxy (B+)
    05. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (B+)
    06. The Monuments Men (B+)
    07. God’s Not Dead (B+)
    08. Interstellar (B)
    09. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (C+)
    10. The Lego Movie (C+)
    11. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (C+)
    12. Noah (C+)
