Sci-Fi Party Line #359 Epic Dump: Turd of the Decade

Cat (@fancyfembot) and Carl (@robominister) get together for their annual tradition, THE TURD OFF. This year is a little different; WE MADE A VIDCAST! Also, due to the Covid-19 Global Pandemic we switched it up a bit this year. We gathered all the films from Turd’s past and put them head to head to determine THE TURD OF THE DECADE.

Turd Criteria:
1) Squandered Effects: Did they have a big budget and use special effects in a meaningful way to advance the story or were the special effects not compelling and misused/underutilized given the budget of the film?
2) Acting?: Did the acting contribute to the enjoyment of the film or was it painful to watch? Did the casting make sense for the film?
3) Turdage Per Dollar: Was there a big budget and nothing to show for it? Did they use the budget to create an effective film or was it wasted?
4) Fury Upon Exit: Were you pissed off when you were done watching this film? Do you still have residual fury when you talk about it?
5) Which Sequel Would Offend the Least?: Do you want a sequel? Could you tolerate a sequel?

Welcome to Sci-Fi Party Line After Dark. Carl is rocking the eye patch. Cat is rocking the bowling shoes. Eric is rocking the Jim Beam Maple.

Carl defends Heroes Reborn. Cat tries to bring sanity to the episode and explains to him why he is wrong; as usual. We discuss the passing Ghostbusters‘ Harold Ramis. You may be surprised at Carl’s reaction to the Matrix prequel news. Carl tries to sell us on a Matrix fan film; Kaydara. Cat is excited about an opportunity associated with Netflix’s Marvel The Defenders in NYC. Again, they both agree on their apprehension for CW’s iZombie. Carl is SUPER PUMPED about M. Night’s new micro-budget vampire film. Eric the Sad Hobo joins the episode live from a bar. After they update him on the conversation, all of them agree and are anticipating Cosmos: A Space Odyssey. They talk about the Being Human/ Almost Human cancellation confusion. Carl professes his love and disappointment in Jeri Ryan’s appearance on Helix. There is some awkward bar bathroom stall talk but Cat rescued the situation by talking about the new Farscape spin-off film. Cat is also concerned about Spider-Man fatigue with the Sony announcement that they want to release a Spider-Man movie every year including Venom & The Sinister 6. They bring up the racial controversy about the Fantastic Four casting but decided they didn’t care. The Gotham TV show is curious creation but the crew seems to adopt a wait-and-see attitude. They don’t care about Jessie Eisenberg being cast as Lex Luthor after the Ben Affleck Batman Man of Steel announcement. Transformers 4 with Marky Mark makes Carl look like a hypocrite for defending Heroes Reborn. Cat is thrilled about Terminator: Genesis, Carl is skeptical, and Eric is confused about what genesis means. They wrap up the episode with more Almost Human discussion.

It’s the end of the year and we have a two-hour show jam packed full of the best and worst science fiction TV shows and movies of the year. Today’s crew is Cat and Carl. We kick off the show with the barely promoted In Time. After that we give the rules for our Second Annual Sci-Fi Turd Off (@15:51). We do a brief review of Cowboys & Aliens (@23:38) prior to putting Cowboys & Aliens and Transformers: Dark of the Moon head to head in this year’s Turd Off (@42:25). We cool off by talking about our favorite sci-fi movies of the year (@1:04:19) but get agitated again by discussing the sci-fi TV turds of the year (@1:15:40). We couldn’t end the show without a mention of SyFy’s holiday specials for Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Haven (@1:32:40). Finally, we wrap up by discussing the movies that we are anticipating in 2012 (@1:36:08).

This is our craziest show yet!

For the 100th show, we did a live episode with nine voice participants and a handful of chat participants via Talkshoe. It was a verbal Road Warrior-styled discussion that was the most fun we’ve had on Sci-Fi Party Line history. The guests were the usual suspects of Carl, Eric, Will, Darrell, Hanako, Alex, Charles and Phineas. Thanks to some of the folks in the chat room: Merlin, Datalore, Willisgirl, Becky and more.

Today’s vocabulary words are schmaltz and Benetton.

There were some audio issues in places but power through it, they go away. We tried to be PG-13 but it ended up being R. We talked about and spoiled Super 8, X-Men: First Class (and how the “black man” always dies first), Thor, Falling Skies, Game of Thrones, Caprica, True Blood and Camelot.
